Racing Post Summaries (1)

Before having a bet on a graded race I like to have a look at the Racing Post website. Above the formlines for each greyhound the summariser gives a short appraisal of its chances. As you’d expect, the writer has a sound knowledge of local form and recognises the important factors that influence the outcome of a graded race. Of course, they can’t get it right all the time, but the majority of the comments are useful. I’ve certainly benefited from being reminded of a facet of a dog’s form that I’ve overlooked or failed to give enough weight to.

What follows is part one of a general survey of summarisers’ comments that I noted in the course of some research into graded form at Great Yarmouth greyhound track. It’s not meant to be exhaustive or in any way scientific, but gives an idea of what the summariser considers important. I’ve listed the specific form factors (1 – 5) together with the actual comments used and how the greyhounds so described subsequently performed in their races (1st, 2nd, 3rd or u/p)

1. Older dogs/veterans

‘Looking to make a wealth of experience count’ (2nd)
‘Always been willing over a lengthy period here’ (3rd)
‘Seems to have been around forever, keen enough’ (u/p)
‘Forgotten what most of these have just learnt’ (3rd)
‘On a few shortlists but advancing years off-putting’ (u/p)
‘Locals know this one like the back of their hand’ (u/p)
‘Remembers the sixties and Beatlemania!’ (u/p)

2. Good recent form

‘Has a taste for success, shouldn’t let you down (1st)
‘A win known to breed confidence, respected’ (u/p)
‘Recent effort firmly in the mind, a player today’ (u/p)
‘Recently bagged winner’s cheque, more to come?’ (1st)
‘Up a rung but no great surprise if equal to it’ (u/p)
‘Hungry for more after recent strike, on shortlist’ (u/p)
‘Respected as a recent winner, it counts for plenty’ (u/p)
‘Recent scorer will look to build on that, chances’ (1st)

3. Out of comfort zone in current grade

‘In good form but has plenty more to do here’ (u/p)
‘Maybe a shade too high in ratings, limited appeal (u/p)
‘Grade stats don’t shout chances from the rooftop’ (3rd)
‘Making all the right noises, could be silenced now’ (u/p)
‘May be flying a bit too high without any wings in this’ (2nd)
‘Record in this grade nothing special, passed over’ (3rd)
‘Very little to brag about at this level, best watched’ (2nd)
‘Make note the grader applies some pressure’ (3rd)

4. Likely to find trouble

‘Can’t buy a clear run, struggle if trend continues’ (3rd)
‘Probably needs to lead, behind 8-ball otherwise’ (u/p)
‘Confidence is an issue after some rough rides’ (3rd)
‘Will have to dodge one or two bullets to win this’ (3rd)
‘Traffic problems have been the trend in last few’ (1st)
‘All aboard for another ride of misfortune? Guess so’ (u/p)
‘Been in the wars last few, needs a change of luck’ (2nd)
‘Hope purchased a sat-nav after recent rough rides!’(u/p)

5. Likely to be prominent

‘Should shoulder much of the workload here, fancied’ (2nd)
‘Likes to play a smash and grab game, may do so’ (u/p)
‘Has a smart pair of trapping boots, soon handy’ (2nd)
‘Game plan is to make all, chance to do so’ (u/p)
‘On the case early against these, so in with a shout’ (1st)
‘Good pace to penultimate turn, build winning lead?’ (u/p)
‘End the winner-hunt here if you like an early bird’ (3rd)
‘Attempt to steal a march and go for broke’ (1st)
