Racing Post Summaries (2)

Last month’s blog looked at the types of comments used by the summarisers of the race cards in the Racing Post. I divided these comments according to the specific form factors that the summariser thought would influence the outcome of the race for that particular greyhound. The five factors were: older dogs / veterans; good recent form; out of comfort zone in current grade; likely to find trouble; likely to be prominent. For each comment, I appended the dog’s finishing position to give an indication of the accuracy of the summariser’s observation. All comments were taken from the Great Yarmouth race cards.

Continuing with this theme, this month we’ll consider the following factors: contender; strong contender; unfancied; likely to be backed; slow starter.

1. Contender

‘Should be physical force here, certainly respected’ (u/p)
‘Expected to be around at the finish, include for sure’ (u/p)
‘Shouldn’t leave empty-handed, worth including’ (1st)
‘Has the tools to throw a spanner in the works’ (1st)
‘Form appears compatible with these, go well’ (u/p)
‘Has a part to play if avoiding trouble, contender’ (2nd)
‘Has to be a candidate for a medal, merits respect’ (3rd)
‘Smart effort last run this trip, don’t dismiss lightly’ (u/p)
‘Been kept ticking over, has a shout for sure’ (2nd)

2. Strong contender

‘Ticks most of the boxes, we’re pretty confident’ (1st)
‘Cracking claims, sure to take all the beating’ (u/p)
‘Record in this class tells a positive story, fancied’ (u/p)
‘Strong fancy, well worth a tasty investment’ (1st)
‘Claims are glaringly obvious, meeting’s banker’ (1st)
‘You’ll find few better bets today, get on!’ (2nd)
‘Appears on a winning mark, looks the part’ (1st)
‘Few hungrier in the line-up, obvious chance’ (1st)
‘Cash is burning a hole in the pocket, should win’ (u/p)

3. Unfancied

‘May find taking first prize something of a tall order’ (u/p)
‘Would produce an unexpected result, please don’t!’ (u/p)
‘Looks a touch vulnerable against these’ (u/p)
‘Must avoid just being a supporting player, not easy’ (u/p)’
‘Appears to have a stiffish task on this occasion’ (u/p)
‘Plenty to do if having a claim for the gold medal’ (u/p)
‘Bookies likely to be generous with the chalk, held’ (u/p)
‘Stronger profiles on view, soon be toast’ (3rd)
‘Hard to get over-excited about prospects here’ (u/p)

4. Likely to be backed

‘Attracts a large share of the market, likewise today?’ (u/p)
‘Fans will want to invest and they’ll expect a return’ (1st)
‘Left out of reckoning as not expecting any value’ (2nd)
‘Has a huge fan club, we advise them to go in again’ (u/p)
‘Cash likely to be down again, well placed we guess’ (u/p)
‘Chances are above average, watch the market’ (1st)
‘Will be popular, have the bookies running for cover’ (1st)
‘Bookies can expect money for again, big chance’ (2nd)
‘Skinny offerings from bookies lately, same again?’ (3rd)

5. Slow starter

‘Can dawdle through the opening metres, luck required’ (2nd)
‘Probably have only fresh air behind early doors’ (3rd)
‘Tardy from the boxes, must track clever to get involved’ (3rd)
‘Slow to wind the legs up, keeping on though’ (3rd)
‘Has to operate from off the pace, it’s never easy’ (u/p)
‘Better exit required, that’s easier said than done’ (3rd)
‘No thrills on run up, will try to engage top gear late’ (u/p)
‘Looking for assistance from early birds tangling’ (3rd)

In next month’s blog I’ll conclude this round-up of Racing Post comments and consider how we may use them to our advantage.
