Sires To Note

Whilst a greyhound’s performance on the racetrack must be the main criterion when weighing up a race and making a selection, other factors can be used to support that decision, of which breeding is one. It is generally accepted that the brood bitch is the most important factor in breeding a good racing greyhound. However, the sire also has an influential part to play. The best sires pass on their racing characteristics to their progeny, whether it be early pace, stamina, trackcraft or – perhaps most vital of all – courage. If, having analysed a race, I find that the dog I fancy is by one of the sires discussed here, my confidence increases.

In recent years Irish-based Australian and American sires have had a massive influence on bloodlines, and most of the best sires are to be found across the Irish Sea. All of the five sires discussed here stand in Ireland. Using information provided on the website of the Greyhound Trainers Association (www.thegta.co.uk) I have listed the up-to-date 2013 graded racing statistics for each sire (number of runs by his progeny, number of wins and winning percentage). I have also noted the five British tracks where the sire has the best winning percentages in 2013.
