Focus on Monmore Green

Monmore Green Stadium is on the outskirts of Wolverhampton, and has been staging greyhound racing since 1928. In the early years its kennels also housed greyhounds from Willenhall Greyhound Stadium, which closed in 1980. In 1943 Monmore inaugurated the Midland Puppy Championship, later renamed the Midland Puppy Derby and then the Ladbroke Puppy Derby. Still going strong, the race’s latest winner was Rising Brandy, a black son of Taylors Sky trained by Matt Dartnall. When Monmore’s main stand was destroyed by fire in 1963 the race was transferred to Willenhall until a new grandstand was built.

In 1970 the owners of the track, the Midland Greyhound Racing Company, sold Monmore and Willenhall Stadia to Totalisators and Greyhound Holdings, a company which already owned four other tracks, including Crayford and Brough Park. TGH’s involvement with Monmore, however, was to be short-lived; four years later they sold Monmore to Ladbrokes.

In 1975 Monmore was the venue for the BBC TV Trophy. After a stamina-sapping 815 metres, only a neck separated the winner, 7/4 favourite Lizzies Girl, from runner-up Silver Lipstick. In 1985 the wonderful stayer Scurlogue Champ won the TV Trophy at Monmore, and followed up in 1986 when the race was run at Brough Park.

Before the war Monmore had staged the Midland Gold Cup, a race which was subsequently discontinued but revived in 1994 as the Ladbrokes Gold Cup over the track’s standard 480 metre distance. The 2017 winner was Droopys Buick (by Yeah Man), trained by Newcastle-based Angela Harrison.

In 2011 Monmore trainer Chris Allsopp won the Champion Trainers title. In his total of 164 open race victories were three Category 1 Finals, including the East Anglian Derby Final at Yarmouth, won by Ballymac Ace. In the same year Monmore won the BAGS Track Championship.

Monmore stages the oldest puppy competition of all, the Trafalgar Cup. First run at Wembley Stadium in 1929, it moved to Oxford in 1999, and on the closure of that track, to Monmore in 2015. In 2017 it was won by Liz McNair’s black and white dog King Elvis, by Tullymurry Act. For staying greyhounds, Monmore hosts the Ladbroke Summer Stayers Classic over 630 metres. Local trainer Corren Price won the race last year with Buckos Lass, a black daughter of the prolific Kinloch Brae, at the rewarding odds of 16/1.

Here are my standard times for Monmore Green:

‘A’ GRADES: 480m

A10: 29.81 (incomplete data)

A9: 29.55 (incomplete data)

A8: 29.36

A7: 29.21

A6: 29.13

A5: 28.99

A4: 28.89.

A3: 28.69

A2: 28.56

A1: 28.42

A rise in grade from A7 to A6 doesn’t look too taxing, with only a length separating the two. By contrast, winners in A4 will have to find, on average, another 2½ lengths if raised in grade on their next appearance. That’s well within the capabilities of a young, progressive greyhound, but I would be cautious about supporting an older, regular A4 performer, who might struggle to find the necessary improvement.

‘S’ GRADES (630m)

S6: rarely used

S5: rarely used

S4: 39.14

S3: 38.75

S2: 38.41

S1: 38.18

There looks to be a gulf in class between dogs competing in S4 and those in the next grade up. Upgraded dogs would have to find, on average, an improvement of almost five lengths to be competitive. It’s not much easier for dogs trying to bridge the gap between S3 and S2, who would need to improve by 4½ lengths. On the other hand downgraded dogs, provided that they aren’t badly out of form, are worth a second look.

‘D’ GRADE (264m)

D1: rarely used

P8: rarely used

416m: rarely used

480m: 28.40 (incomplete data)

630m: 38.21 (incomplete data)
